Apply for an older person's bus pass

Your National Entitlement Card (NEC) will be your bus pass. You can apply:

  • online – in all areas of Scotland
  • through your local Post Office – if you live in an area where it offers this service
  • through Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) – if you live in one of the 12 local councils in the Glasgow and Strathclyde area
  • through your local council – if you live in an area where you cannot apply through the Post Office or SPT

Apply for an older person’s bus pass online at getyournec.scot.

This service is available in all areas of Scotland.

Apply through the Post Office

You can apply through the Post Office if you live in one of the local council areas where it offers this service:

  • Aberdeenshire
  • Argyll and Bute
  • Comhairle nan Eilean Siar
  • East Ayrshire
  • East Dunbartonshire
  • East Renfrewshire
  • Glasgow City
  • Highland
  • Inverclyde
  • North Ayrshire
  • North Lanarkshire
  • Renfrewshire
  • South Ayrshire
  • South Lanarkshire
  • West Dunbartonshire

Not all Post Offices take bus pass applications. Check with your local branch to be sure.

If you apply through the Post Office and do not receive your bus pass in 2 weeks, contact your local council for an update.

Apply through Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT)

SPT manages bus pass applications for 12 local councils in the Glasgow and Strathclyde area.

You can apply through SPT if you live in:

  • Argyll and Bute
  • East Ayrshire
  • East Dunbartonshire
  • East Renfrewshire
  • Glasgow City
  • Inverclyde
  • North Ayrshire
  • North Lanarkshire
  • Renfrewshire
  • South Ayrshire
  • South Lanarkshire
  • West Dunbartonshire

You can apply by:

  • email
  • post
  • in person – you’ll need to make an appointment first

Apply through your local council

If you live in an area where you cannot apply through the Post Office or SPT, you can apply through your local council.

How you can apply and how long it will take depends on each council. Your council will tell you the best way to apply in your area.

What you need to apply

You'll need:

  • a recent photo
  • proof of your current address
  • proof of your age

If you’re applying online, you’ll also need:

  • a laptop, tablet, phone or other device with a camera
  • a myaccount – you can register if you do not already have one 
  • proof of identity
