Healthcare

You may develop health conditions as a result of your service in the armed forces. These can be physical or mental health conditions.

You are protected by the Armed Forces Covenant

NHS Scotland and all Scottish health boards have signed the Armed Forces Covenant.

The Armed Forces Covenant makes sure that:

  • veterans are not disadvantaged when accessing healthcare

  • due consideration is given to people with ongoing health problems that are a direct result of military service

All healthcare services must follow the principals of the covenant.

Find out how the covenant makes sure you have fair access to healthcare on the Armed Forces Covenant website

Find mental health support

NHS Scotland provides care and support to those who are in or have left the armed forces. This includes dedicated mental health services through your GP.

You can find information about healthcare for veterans on the NHS inform website

Find support for your physical health

Injuries sustained during service with the armed forces can be complex and severe. These injuries may impact your physical health when you return to civilian life.

Physical injuries that are the result of service will be treated by the NHS. You should contact your GP to access NHS care.

When you leave the armed forces

When you leave the armed forces, you should contact your GP practice first to access NHS care. You can discuss any issue with them.

Your GP can also refer you to specialist services if necessary.

Find your local GP when you leave the armed forces on the NHS inform website.
