Education and training

You can get help paying for qualifications if you:

  • are planning on leaving the armed forces
  • have already left and want to know more about your options

Grants available through SAAS

If you have been serving abroad in the armed forces, you may be eligible for a Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS) grant. This depends on where you were a resident when you joined up.

SAAS gives financial support to eligible students in higher education in the UK.

You can contact SAAS on 0300 555 0505 to find out if you're eligible for a grant.

You can also find out about general financial support for education on the SAAS website.

Fund a qualification

The armed forces Enhanced Learning Credit (ELC) scheme allows you to apply for money to pay for qualifications. You can apply whether you're still serving in the armed forces or have already left.

How the ELC works

If you've joined the ELC scheme, you will not need to pay for some qualifications such as select:

  • Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs)
  • diplomas
  • Scottish Highers

Find out more about which qualifications are included and how to apply on the ELC website.
