Claim a tax refund

If you've paid too much tax, the way you get a refund depends on your circumstances.

Sometimes HMRC will send you a refund automatically. Sometimes you need to make a claim.

Find out more about claiming a tax refund on GOV.UK.

Social Security pension lump sums

If you get a Social Security pension lump sum, it’s taxed at Scottish Income Tax rates.

The DWP oversee this payment and deduct the UK rates of Income Tax. This may mean you underpay or overpay the tax on these payments as the Scottish tax rates are different.

If you think you’re affected by this contact HMRC. They deal with Income Tax enquiries.
