Apply for a Coat of Arms

You can apply for a Scottish Coat of Arms if you:

  • have permanently settled in Scotland
  • own a property in Scotland that you can live in
  • were born in Scotland
  • own a Scottish feudal barony

If you don't live in Scotland, you may be able to apply for Arms in the name of an ancestor who lived in Scotland. You'll need to provide proof of ancestry.

To apply for a Coat of Arms, you must send a 'petition' to the Court of the Lord Lyon asking for Arms to be granted.

Visit the Court of the Lord Lyon website for sample petitions, forms and information on fees.
