Volunteer as an Independent Prison Monitor

An Independent Prison Monitor (IPM) is a volunteer who visits prisons to check on prisoner conditions and treatment.

What IPMs do

IPMs talk to prisoners to make sure:

  • their rights are protected
  • they have the support they need
  • they're treated fairly by prison staff
  • they can raise issues if they need to

You’ll get full training and support. You must be at least 18 years old and have good communication skills to apply.
