How to find a GP

Find a GP surgery near you on the NHS inform website.

You might need to contact several medical practices. Some might be unable to take on new patients or you may live outside their catchment area.

If you need advice on finding a local GP contact your Regional Office of the Practitioner Services Division of National Services Scotland. They can help you register with a local surgery.

If you move house you may need to register with a new medical practice. You can still register with a medical practice if you do not have an NHS number.

How to register

You'll need to fill in a form. You'll get this from the GP's office or you can download it from the Practitioner Services website.

it's helpful to provide your:

  • name
  • address
  • date of birth
  • photographic ID like a passport or driving licence
  • NHS medical card or NHS number

Depending on the rules of the surgery you may need to see a practice nurse or make an appointment for a check-up.

You can ask to be seen as a temporary resident if you're staying somewhere longer than 24 hours but less than 3 months.
