Costs
Personal Care provided by your local council is free if the assessment of your care needs shows that you need it. You can get this regardless of age, income, wealth, or marital or civil partner status.
Nursing Care from the NHS in your own home is free and should be provided by your GP surgery.
If your assessment says you need a different type of care
If the care you're assessed as needing does not fall into the category of Personal Care, you may be charged for it. This may be for things like housework, shopping and making beds.
Charges vary depending on your local council. There will also be a financial assessment to decide how much you need to pay for this type of care.
Personal and Nursing Care in care homes
If your assessment says you need Personal and Nursing Care in a care home, you can get a payment towards this part of your fees.
The Personal and Nursing Care payment rates from 1 April 2024 are:
- £248.70 a week for personal care
- £111.90 a week for nursing care
Personal and Nursing Care payments can only be made after you've had an assessment of your care needs. Your council does not have to make any payments for Personal and Nursing Care you received before your assessment.
