Referendums

You must be registered to vote to take part in a referendum.

A referendum asks you to give your opinion on an important question or matter.

In a referendum, you will vote for a policy, not a political person or party. For example, should Scotland become an independent country?

Referendums can be:

  • national, where people across the whole of the UK can vote
  • regional, where only people in a certain part of the UK can vote – for example, Scotland
  • local, held by local councils for people in their area

Vote in a referendum

You can vote in a referendum in the same way as you would for an election.
