After you've applied for Young Carer Grant

Within 28 days of applying, as long as you've sent all the documents we've asked for, we’ll either:

  • contact you if we need to ask you any questions about your form or request any more documents
  • send you a letter telling you whether you're going to be paid Young Carer Grant. We’ll only do this if you've sent all the documents we've asked for

If you're going to be paid Young Carer Grant, it will be within 4-5 days of getting your Young Carer Grant letter.

Sending photocopies of documents

After you've applied, you'll need to send photocopies of documents to confirm where you live. You'll get a letter to let you know what documents you need to send. If you'd prefer to send these documents before getting your letter, you can find out what documents you need to send.

You should post any photocopied documents to:

Social Security Scotland
PO Box 10314
Dundee
DD1 9GH

Please write these details on your photocopied documents:

  • your full name and date of birth
  • your National Insurance number
  • the words 'Young Carer Grant', so we know what you're applying for

You should check you've paid the right amount of postage before you send the photocopies of your documents.

Try to send copies of certificates or legal orders, rather than originals.

Text message or email to confirm you've applied

If you asked for a text message or email to confirm Social Security Scotland have got your form, you'll get this text within a couple of hours of your form being received.

Letter to the person you care for

We'll send the person or people you care for a letter to let them know you've applied for Young Carer Grant. This is because we need to tell them that we'll check what benefits they get. We might also need to ask them to confirm that you care for them.

We need to do this to confirm you're able to get Young Carer Grant. This will not affect any of the benefits the person or people you care for are getting.

If you have any questions or concerns about this, call us free on 0800 182 2222.
